Killer Mike found the light at the end of a dark tunnel.
The "Scientists & Engineers" rapper shared that her received uplifting news about his 21-year-old son Michael "Pony Boy" Render—who has been battling kidney disease since he was a teen—just one day after he was arrested at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
"In the moment, I felt wrong—and I was. As I sat by myself for three hours, I just prayed and thanked God," Killer Mike exclusively told E! News Francesca Amiker on the red carpet at the 2024 BET Awards June 30. "And the next day, my son got a kidney and he was healed." (See more stars who showed out for the 2024 BET Awards here.)
The 49-year-old, who took home three trophies including Best Rap Album at the ceremony, was taken into custody during the February 2024 awards show for an incident unrelated to the event and was released hours later. As soon as he got his son's health update, it totally changed his perspective on the brief ordeal.
"I found that in that moment, like Daniel in the lion's den, it was meant for me to simply be humbled and honored the Lord," Killer Mike explained, "and I appreciate the opportunity to do so.”
This isn't the first time Killer Mike—who also shares kids Malik, 29, Aniyah, 26, and Mikey, 17, with wife of 20 years Shana—has gotten candid about the highs and lows of Michael's three-year-long wait on the kidney donor list. Last year, he recounted feeling a responsibility to be there for his son's first surgery.
"When s--t gets tough, as a father, you should be the one," Killer Mike explained during a November 2023 appearance on In Depth with Graham Bensinger before describing the emotional experience. "I had to stand there next to my baby boy as he was administered the anesthetic...and I remember him starting to cry and me starting to cry and taking him into the operating room and doctors talking to me."
He added, "I just prayed daily."
